3 steps to reduce the number of spam that goes to your iPhone or iPad

If your iPhone or iPad is your primary device to read emails, Spam could be a real problem.

Most people use anti-spam software in their PCs, but in the iPhone it is not possible to install add-ons to the default email app, therefore users cannot install anti-spam apps.

The other problem I’ve found is that the default configuration of the iOS email app is not the most appropriate to fight against the spam you receive. So here you have three suggestions to help you reduce the number of spam you receive in your phone:

  1. Deactivate the “Load Remote Images” switch: Most spammers send remote images in their HTML email body. When you open one of the emails, the pictures are loaded and they execute an script confirming that your address is real and active. To avoid this problem, go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars and turn off the “Load Remote Images” switch.
  2. Make spam emails appear more obvious: The iPhone and the iPad in portrait mode shows the sender name, the title and two lines of the content. Many times you cannot identify a spam email with only this information and you end up opening it. Once you are inside, in the small screen of the iPhone is not difficult to accidentally click on a link. To increase the visibility of spams, you could increase the quantity of lines shown in the email preview. To do that go to Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Preview and increase the number of visible lines from 2 to 4 or 5.
  3. Delete spam emails before opening them: When you are in the email list, you can delete the emails before open them. You can do it swiping your finger from left to right or right to left over the email you want to delete and then tap on delete. You can also tap on Edit, at the top right of the screen, then select the emails you want to delete and tap on delete.
